This mini documentary takes a look at how ELON MUSK sees the world through a scientific and engineering mind - and how this fuels the businesses he has started. We will also take a look at how he taught himself about different industries: from banking (Paypal), to rocket engineering (SpaceX).

Elon Musk champions the use of physics as a way of thinking. And believes that more people should be innovating in manufacturing - to help build the city of the future. Rather than entering the finance, law, or internet based industries. This video also takes a look at the 'reasoning from first principles' framework - which will allow anyone to view their world, personal and business, just like Elon.

• How he joined a Mars society when he moved to LA, helping him start his new space venture

• Elon Musk's biography as a child - looking at his schooling, what he read, and how he viewed the world

• Elon Musk quotes - showing how he views the world through a scientific mind - showing why he started his own school, and Neuralink

• A look at his college days - when he would sell computer parts out of his dorm room, and building his own rocket kits when he was younger

• How he surrounds himself with smart people - which fast tracks his learning and education in new industries

• And the expectations when hiring people for SpaceX or Tesla

FATHER OF FIBRE OPTICS : CHARLES KAO

The father of fiber optics: Charles Kao

The rapid transmission of signals over long distances is fundamental to the flow of information in our time. Since the 1930s thin filaments, or fibers, of glass have been used to see inside the body, but these long remained unusable for long-distance information transfer because too much light was lost along the way. In 1966, Charles Kao presented a solution: fibers of very pure glass transported sufficient light. Together with laser technology, his solution has made telecommunication using optical fibers possible.

Kao shared the 2009 Nobel Prize in Physics "for groundbreaking achievements concerning the transmission of light in fibers for optical communication."

#WorldDevelopmentInformationDay

Images: Charles Kao as a young scientist, 1960s. Optic fibers made of glass make up the circulatory system of our communication society. There is enough fiber to encircle the globe more than 25,000 times.

MICHAEL JORDAN : AN INSPIRING STORY

*AN INSPIRING STORY!*

Michael Jordan was born in 1963, in the slums of Brooklyn, New York.

He had four  siblings & his father's earnings were not sufficient to provide for the whole family.

He grew up in a poor neighbourhood. Exposed to mindless violence & heavy discrimination in the slums, he saw for himself only a hopeless future.

His father saw in Michael, a lost soul & decided to do something.

He gave Michael, who was 13 years old, a piece of used clothing & asked: "What do you think the value of this outfit would be?"

Jordan replied,"Maybe one dollar."

His father asked, "Can you sell it for two dollars? If you can sell it, it would mean that you are a big help to your family."

Jordan nodded his head, "I'll try, but no guarantee that I'll be successful."

Jordan carefully washed the cloth clean. Because they didn't have an iron, to smoothen the cloth, he levelled it with a clothes brush on a flat board, then kept it in the sun to dry. The next day, he brought the clothes to a crowded underground station. After offering it for more than six hours. Jordan finally managed to sell it for $2. He took the two dollar bill & ran home.

After that, everyday he looked for used clothing, washed & ironed it & sold it in the crowd.

More than ten days later, his father again gave him a piece of used clothing, "Can you think of a way you can sell this for 20 bucks?"

Aghast, Jordan said, "How is it possible? This outfit can only fetch two dollars at the most."

His father replied, "Why don't you try it first? There might be a way!"

After breaking his head for a few hours, finally, Jordan got an idea.

He asked for a  cousin's help to paint a picture of Donald Duck & Mickey Mouse on the garment. Then he tried to sell it in the school where the children of the rich study.

Soon a housekeeper, who was there to pick his master, bought that outfit for his master. The master was a little boy of only 10 years. He loved it so much that he gave a five dollar tip. 25 dollars was a huge amount for Jordan, the equivalent of a month's salary of his father.

When he got home, his father gave him yet another piece of used clothing, "Are you able to resell it at a price of 200 dollars?" Jordan's eyes lit up.

This time, Jordan accepted the clothes without the slightest doubt. Two months later a popular movie actress from the movie "Charlie's Angels", Farah Fawcett came to New York for her Movie promos. After the Press Conference, Jordan made his way through the security forces to reach the side of Farah Fawcett & requested her autograph on the piece of clothing. When Fawcett saw this innocent child asking for her autograph, she gladly signed it.

Jordan was shouting very excitedly, "This is a jersey signed by Miss Farah Fawcett, the selling price is 200 dollars!" He auctioned off the clothes, to a businessman for a price of 1,200 dollars!

Upon returning home, his father broke into TEARS & said, "I am amazed that you did it My child! You're really great! "

*That night, Jordan slept alongside his father. His father said, "Son, in your experience selling these three pieces of clothing, what did you learn about success?"*

*Jordan replied, "Where there's a will, there's a way."*

*His father nodded his head, then shook his head, "What you say is not entirely wrong! But that was not my intention. I just wanted to show you that a piece of used clothing which is worth only a dollar can also be increased in value! Then how about us - living & thinking humans? We may be darker & poorer, but what if we CAN increase our VALUE?"*

*This thought enlightened young Jordan. Even a piece of used clothing could be made dignified, then why not me? There is absolutely no reason to underestimate myself.*

From then on, Michael Jordan felt that his future would be beautiful & full of hope.

*He went on to become the greatest Basketball player of all times.*

*How can I increase my own value? I am finding it a very interesting thought. I am sure, you too, will!*

Have an inspiring & happy weekend! Follow Norms! Stay Safe!

WINNERS OF NOBEL PRIZE FOR MEDICINE 2020

The Nobel Assembly at Karolinska Institutet has decided to award the 2020 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine jointly to Harvey J. Alter, Michael Houghton and Charles M. Rice “for the discovery of Hepatitis C virus.”

This year’s Nobel Prize is awarded to three scientists who have made a decisive contribution to the fight against blood-borne hepatitis, a major global health problem that causes cirrhosis and liver cancer in people around the world.

Harvey J. Alter, Michael Houghton and Charles M. Rice made seminal discoveries that led to the identification of a novel virus, Hepatitis C virus. Prior to their work, the discovery of the Hepatitis A and B viruses had been critical steps forward, but the majority of blood-borne hepatitis cases remained unexplained. The discovery of Hepatitis C virus revealed the cause of the remaining cases of chronic hepatitis and made possible blood tests and new medicines that have saved millions of lives.

Louise Glück, Winner of this year's Nobel Prize for Literature.

"You have to live your life if you’re going to do original work. Your work will come out of an authentic life, and if you suppress all of your most passionate impulses in the service of an art that has not yet declared itself, you’re making a terrible mistake.

When I was young I led the life I thought writers were supposed to lead, in which you repudiate the world, ostentatiously consecrating all of your energies to the task of making art. I just sat in Provincetown at a desk and it was ghastly - the more I sat there not writing the more I thought that I just hadn’t given up the world enough. After two years of that, I came to the conclusion that I wasn’t going to be a writer. So I took a teaching job in Vermont, though I had spent my life till that point thinking that real poets don’t teach. But I took this job, and the minute I started teaching - the minute I had obligations in the world - I started to write again."

Mario Molina, the 1995 Nobel Prize Awardee in Chemistry

"If we work together we all end up having a better world."

Mario Molina, who was awarded the 1995 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for demonstrating that CFC gases were damaging the ozone layer, has passed away aged 77.

After showing the damage that CFCs cause, Molina helped develop the Montreal Protocol which banned their use worldwide. Today, thanks to his work, we have managed to reverse this depletion and the ozone layer is recovering.

Molina was passionate about working together to find solutions to better look after our Earth: "We realised, "If it is not us then who? If it is not now, when?"

SPIRITUAL MASTERS : Thich Nhat Hanh’s Health and Updates

Thich Nhat Hanh’s Health and Updates

“Thầy is currently residing at Từ Hiếu Temple in Huế, Vietnam, where he first ordained as a novice monk over 70 years ago.
Following a major stroke in November 2014, Thay has been on a long journey of recovery. Unfortunately he is still unable to speak, and has some paralysis on the right side of his body. Despite this, he remains sharp and perceptive, and commands a powerful presence of peace and concentration, joining his community for walking meditations, mindful meals, ceremonies and festivals.”
Now there’s a post here notifying Thầy had stopped eating, the information is awaiting to be verified. On October 11 his body will turn 94.

Grateful thanks to

This body is not me; I am not caught in this body, I am life without boundaries,
I have never been born and I have never died. Over there the wide ocean and the sky with many galaxies
All manifests from the basis of consciousness. Since beginningless time I have always been free.

Birth and death are only a door through which we go in and out.
Birth and death are only a game of hide-and-seek.

So smile to me and take my hand and wave good-bye.

Tomorrow we shall meet again or even before. We shall always be meeting again at the true source,
Always meeting again on the myriad paths of life.

Thich Nhat Hanh “No Death, No Fear: Comforting Wisdom for Life”, lullaby song for the dying by Thay based on the sutta "Given to the Dying" in the Anguttara Nikaya.

Thank you for everything Thay 🙏💚

In the tradition of Buddhism, we speak of bodhicitta, the mind of enlightenment, the beginner's  mind. The moment when we are, inspired by the desire to practice in order to transform your suffering, in order to be able to help many people around you who suffer. That mind is very beautiful. That mind is called beginner's mind. And sometimes we call it the mind of love. It is because of love that you practice. You are not trying just to run away from suffering. You want more than that. You want to transform your own suffering. You want to be free, in order to help other people, many other people to transform their suffering. And as a monk, as a nun, as a bodhisattva lay practitioner, you should maintain that beginner’s mind alive, because that is a powerful source of energy.  And you will be nourished by it. With that source of energy you will practice the precepts well. You will have enough energy in order to encounter the difficulties, to overcome the difficulties on your life of practice. So nourishing the mind of love, nourishing, preserving the beginner’s mind, nourishing the bodhicitta, is a very important practice. Don’t allow it to die after two years or three years. Thay has had the happiness of keeping his bodhicitta alive for a long time. And it’s not that on his path of practice he did not encounter many obstacles. He did encounter a lot of obstacles. But he has not given up, because the bodhicitta in him was always very very strong, the beginner’s mind. So if you are a monastic member, if you are a lay member of the community, you should know that as long as that beginner’s mind is still in you, powerful, you don’t have to worry, even if there are a lot of difficulties on your path, you will overcome. And the moment you feel that beginner’s mind in you is weak, you know that is a big danger, because anything can happen if your bodhicitta, your beginner’s mind is weak. So don’t allow it to be like that, cultivate your beginner’s mind, and stay a bodhisattva for the whole of your life. You will be a happy person, and you will be able to make the happiness of many people.
