In the 8th century, a South Indian (Tamil) Buddhist monk named Bodhisena journeyed from Madurai to the Far East in an attempt to locate his spiritual mentor. He arrived in Imperial Nara, Japan and discovered a country on the brink of collapse: wracked by drought and a smallpox epidemic, facing an ongoing debt crisis, and struggling through political turmoil. Enjoy! Some commenters have requested additional reading and sources: - "From Outcasts to Emperors: Shingon Ritsu and the Mañjuśrī Cult in Medieval Japan," by David Quinter (pg. 65+ for the transformation of Gyoki's public image as Manjusri) - "A Waka Anthology: Grasses of Remembrance" by Edwin A. Cranston (pg. 434 for the exchange between Gyoki and Bodhisena) - "Japan: Its Architecture, Art and Art Manufactures," by Christopher Dresser (includes discussions on Todaiji temple and its cost) - "Population, Disease, and Land in Early Japan, 645–900" by William Wayne Ferris (includes discussions on the smallpox epidemic and its impacts) - "Japanese Buddhism" by Charles Eliot - "Music from the Tang Court," by Laurence Picken (includes discussions about Hironari's return delegation from China with Bodhisena) #japanesehistory#japaneseculture#buddhism -- Sakuya by Peritune http://peritune.com/

LAST LIVING MEMBER OF THE FIRST LOK SABHA

NEWTON, THE GENIUS

Nobel Laureate Elie Wiesel

Nobel Laureate Elie Wiesel was a holocaust survivor, philosopher and humanist.

Wiesel made it his life's work to bear witness to the genocide committed by the Nazis during World War II. He was the world's leading spokesman on the Holocaust.

After Hitler's forces had moved into Hungary in 1944, the Wiesel family was deported to the Auschwitz extermination camp in Poland. Elie Wiesel's mother and younger sister perished in the gas chamber there. In 1945 Elie and his father were sent on to Buchenwald, where his father died of starvation and dysentery. Seventeen-year-old Elie was still alive when American soldiers opened the camp.

For the world to remember and learn from the Holocaust was not Elie Wiesel's only goal. He thought it equally important to fight indifference and the attitude that "it's no concern of mine". Elie Wiesel saw the struggle against indifference as a struggle for peace. In his words, "The opposite of love is not hate, but indifference".

Elie Wiesel was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize "for being a messenger to mankind: his message is one of peace, atonement and dignity." On international day of commemoration in memory of the victims of the holocaust we try to live by his words.

Grateful thanks to

MARIE CURIE

On 23 January 1911, Marie Skłodowska Curie was rejected admission to the French Academy of Sciences.

Marie Curie applied for the chair in the section of physics left vacant by academician Gernez, and formerly occupied by her husband Pierre Curie. The French Academy of Sciences had so far never admitted a woman. Of the Academy's 66 members, Curie received only 28 votes, while 30 votes were cast for Edouard Branly.

#Forest #Organicfarming #Climateresilient In 1988, SABARMATEE AND HER FATHER RADHAMOHAN bought an acre of degraded land in Nayagarh district of Odisha. They wanted to set up an experiment to see if a forest using organic techniques. Organic farming was not widespread in India at that time, therefore they had to rely on trial and error. But over time their efforts succeeded and after nearly three decades their one acre has grown to 90 acres and with a lush forest cover. In 1989 the duo registered a NGO called Sambhav, which would work on organic farming and ecological conservation. Within their forest is also a 2.5 acre plot which is used for seed preservation. Over the year they have managed to collect, grow and preserve nearly 800 varieties of traditional seeds. More than half of these seeds are of paddy that can grow under different climatic systems and under different stress levels. Some of their seed can tolerate water logging and heavy rain while the other varieties can tolerate drought. There are also certain varieties that are highly nutritious. Sabarmatee's efforts have built up an important repository of seeds that can help alleviate the effects of climate change. When Odisha was hit by cyclonic storms in 2013 and 2014, 34 varieties of rice managed to withstand the damage.
