Thich Nhat Hanh’s Health and Updates
“Thầy is currently residing at Từ Hiếu Temple in Huế, Vietnam, where he first ordained as a novice monk over 70 years ago.
Following a major stroke in November 2014, Thay has been on a long journey of recovery. Unfortunately he is still unable to speak, and has some paralysis on the right side of his body. Despite this, he remains sharp and perceptive, and commands a powerful presence of peace and concentration, joining his community for walking meditations, mindful meals, ceremonies and festivals.”
Now there’s a post here notifying Thầy had stopped eating, the information is awaiting to be verified. On October 11 his body will turn 94.
Grateful thanks to
This body is not me; I am not caught in this body, I am life without boundaries,
I have never been born and I have never died. Over there the wide ocean and the sky with many galaxies
All manifests from the basis of consciousness. Since beginningless time I have always been free.
Birth and death are only a door through which we go in and out.
Birth and death are only a game of hide-and-seek.
So smile to me and take my hand and wave good-bye.
Tomorrow we shall meet again or even before. We shall always be meeting again at the true source,
Always meeting again on the myriad paths of life.
~ Thich Nhat Hanh “No Death, No Fear: Comforting Wisdom for Life”, lullaby song for the dying by Thay based on the sutta "Given to the Dying" in the Anguttara Nikaya.
Thank you for everything Thay 🙏💚
In the tradition of Buddhism, we speak of bodhicitta, the mind of enlightenment, the beginner's mind. The moment when we are, inspired by the desire to practice in order to transform your suffering, in order to be able to help many people around you who suffer. That mind is very beautiful. That mind is called beginner's mind. And sometimes we call it the mind of love. It is because of love that you practice. You are not trying just to run away from suffering. You want more than that. You want to transform your own suffering. You want to be free, in order to help other people, many other people to transform their suffering. And as a monk, as a nun, as a bodhisattva lay practitioner, you should maintain that beginner’s mind alive, because that is a powerful source of energy. And you will be nourished by it. With that source of energy you will practice the precepts well. You will have enough energy in order to encounter the difficulties, to overcome the difficulties on your life of practice. So nourishing the mind of love, nourishing, preserving the beginner’s mind, nourishing the bodhicitta, is a very important practice. Don’t allow it to die after two years or three years. Thay has had the happiness of keeping his bodhicitta alive for a long time. And it’s not that on his path of practice he did not encounter many obstacles. He did encounter a lot of obstacles. But he has not given up, because the bodhicitta in him was always very very strong, the beginner’s mind. So if you are a monastic member, if you are a lay member of the community, you should know that as long as that beginner’s mind is still in you, powerful, you don’t have to worry, even if there are a lot of difficulties on your path, you will overcome. And the moment you feel that beginner’s mind in you is weak, you know that is a big danger, because anything can happen if your bodhicitta, your beginner’s mind is weak. So don’t allow it to be like that, cultivate your beginner’s mind, and stay a bodhisattva for the whole of your life. You will be a happy person, and you will be able to make the happiness of many people.
