Happy birthday to Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, Nobel Laureate and Africa’s first democratically elected female president.
Sirleaf was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2011, alongside Leymah Gbowee and Tawakkol Karman for their non-violent struggle for the safety of women and for women’s rights to full participation in peace-building work.
She was elected President of Liberia in 2005 and oversaw a reign of uninterrupted peace in Liberia for 12 years. She stepped down from the position in October 2017.
