SCIENTIST OF THE DAY

When studying and formulating #AlbertEinstein's theory of general relativity, various mathematical structures and techniques are used. The main tools used in this geometrical theory of gravitation are tensor fields defined on a Lorentzian manifold representing spacetime. Tensor calculus allows presentation of physics equations in a form that is independent of the choice of coordinates on the manifold. Today our "scientist of the day" is the man who developed tensor calculus with his teacher.

It's death anniversary of #TullioLeviCivita, one of the founders of absolute differential calculus (tensor calculus) --

(Scientist of the Day - 29 December)

In 1900 Levi-Civita published, jointly with his teacher #RicciCurbastro, the theory of tensors "Méthodes de calcul differential absolu et leurs applications" which Einstein used as a resource to master the tensor calculus, a critical tool in the development of the theory of general relativity.

Tensor calculus has many applications in physics, engineering and computer science including ....
