NOBEL LAUREATE C V RAMAN & THE STUDY OF SCATTERING OF LIGHT

“A voyage to Europe in the summer of 1921 gave me the first opportunity of observing the wonderful blue opalescence of the Mediterranean Sea. It seemed not unlikely that the phenomenon owed its origin to the scattering of sunlight by the molecules of the water. To test this explanation, it appeared desirable to ascertain the laws governing the diffusion of light in liquids, and experiments with this object were started immediately on my return to Calcutta in September, 1921. It soon became evident, however, that the subject possessed a significance extending far beyond the special purpose for which the work was undertaken, and that it offered unlimited scope for research. It seemed indeed that the study of light-scattering might carry one into the deepest problems of physics and chemistry, and it was this belief which led to the subject becoming the main theme of our activities at Calcutta from that time onwards.”

The renowned physicist Sir Chandrasekhara Venkata Raman founded the Indian Journal of Physics, sponsored the establishment of the Indian Academy of Sciences and was awarded the 1930 Nobel Prize in Physics for "for his work on the scattering of light and for the discovery of the effect named after him." In his Nobel Prize lecture he gave an insight into how his research began.

André Malraux was a French adventurer, award-winning author, statesman and known for his interest in archaeology. He came to India after his father's death and traveled extensively through Indochina and China. He was on friendly terms with Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru. Indians will recall that during India's ordeal André Malraux made a public declaration stating that he was willing to go and fight for Bangladesh. Three thousand Frenchmen, among whom senior officers, then immediately proposed to follow his example. The film narrates the life of André Malraux and his relation with India through interviews, images of old archaeological items and other old footage.

BIJU PATNAIK, A MULTI-FACETED PERSONALITY

Biju (Bijayananda) Patnaik (1916 - 1997) is the only person in India on whose death his body was wrapped in the national flag of three countries. India, Russia and Indonesia.

Biju was also the Chief Minister of Odisha for 2 terms

Biju Patnaik was a pilot and when the Soviet Union was in trouble during World War II, he bombed Hitler's forces by flying a fighter aircraft Dakota, which forced Hitler to retreat.  The highest award was also given to him and he was granted honorary citizenship by the Soviet Union.

When the Kavalis attacked Kashmir, it was Biju Patnaik who made several trips a day from Delhi to Srinagar on 27th Oct 1947 by flying a plane and transporting the soldiers to Srinagar.

Indonesia was once a colony of Dutch ie Holland and the Dutch occupied a large area of Indonesia. Dutch soldiers kept the whole sea around Indonesia under their control and they did not let any Indonesian citizen out.

Indonesia was freed from Dutch in 1945 and again in July 1947 PM Sutan Sjahrir was house arrested by the Dutch. They sought India's help. Then Nehru asked Biju Patnaik to rescue the then Indonesian PM Sjahrir to India. On 22nd July 1947, Biju Patnaik and  his wife took a Dakota plane without caring for her life, while flying over the control area of the Dutch, they landed on their soil and showing great bravery brought the Indonesian Prime Minister to India safely via Singapore.  The incident developed a tremendous energy in them and they attacked the Dutch soldiers and Indonesia became a completely independent country.

Later, when the daughter of Indonesian President Sukarno was born, he called Biju Patnaik and his wife to name the newcomer. Then Biju Patnaik and his wife named the daughter of the President of Indonesia as Meghawati. Indonesia had granted honorary citizenship award 'Bhumi Putra' of their country to Biju Patnaik and his wife in 1950. Later he was awarded the highest honorary award of Indonesia 'Bintang Jasa Utma' on their 50th year of independence.

After the death of Biju Patnaik, seven days of state mourning was observed in Indonesia and one day state mourning was observed in Russia and all flags were lowered.

I felt a sense of pride when I came to know about such a great person of our country which our history books never told us.

JAWAHARLAL NEHRU & THE CHILDREN'S DAY

Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru by Ravi Varma Press, Malavli, Lonavla, Maharashtra

Children's Day is celebrated across India to increase awareness of the rights, care and education of children. It is celebrated on 14 November every year as a tribute to the birthday of India's First Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru. Known as Chacha Nehru among children, Nehru advocated for children to have all-rounded education that would build a better society in the future. Nehru considered children as real strength of a nation and foundation of society. On this day, many educational and motivational programs are held across India for children.

The celebration of Children's Day in India dates back to 1956. Prior to the death of Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru, India celebrated Children's Day on 20 November (the date observed as Universal Children's Day by the United Nations). After the death of Jawaharlal Nehru, his birth anniversary was chosen to be celebrated as Children's Day in India. A resolution was passed in the parliament to give a befitting farewell to the first Prime Minister of India.

This mini documentary takes a look at how Elon Musk sees the world through a scientific and engineering mind - and how this fuels the businesses he has started. We will also take a look at how he taught himself about different industries: from banking (Paypal), to rocket engineering (SpaceX).

Elon Musk champions the use of physics as a way of thinking. And believes that more people should be innovating in manufacturing - to help build the city of the future. Rather than entering the finance, law, or internet based industries. This video also takes a look at the 'reasoning from first principles' framework - which will allow anyone to view their world, personal and business, just like Elon.

• How he joined a Mars society when he moved to LA, helping him start his new space venture

• Elon Musk's biography as a child - looking at his schooling, what he read, and how he viewed the world

• Elon Musk quotes - showing how he views the world through a scientific mind - showing why he started his own school, and Neuralink

• A look at his college days - when he would sell computer parts out of his dorm room, and building his own rocket kits when he was younger

• How he surrounds himself with smart people - which fast tracks his learning and education in new industries

• And the expectations when hiring people for SpaceX or Tesla

NOBEL LAUREATE Irène Joliot-Curie, D/O.NOBEL LAUREATES MARIE & PIERRE CURIE

Irène Joliot-Curie was born in Paris on 12 September 1897, as the daughter of Nobel Prize laureates Marie Skłodowska and Pierre Curie.

As a young woman during World War I Irène worked together with her mother to provide mobile X-ray units for wounded soldiers. She resumed her studies at the university in Paris after the war and later worked at the institute that her parents had founded. It was there that she conducted her Nobel Prize-awarded work together with Frédéric Joliot, whom she married in 1926. The couple was politically active and worked to combat fascism and Nazism. They had two children.

Irène Joliot-Curie and Frédéric Joliot shared the 1935 #NobelPrize in Chemistry "in recognition of their synthesis of new radioactive elements".

Radiation from radioactive substances also became an important tool in investigating atoms. When Irène Joliot-Curie and Frédéric Joliot bombarded a thin piece of aluminum with alpha particles (helium atom nuclei) in 1934, a new kind of radiation was discovered that left traces inside an apparatus known as a cloud chamber. The pair discovered that the radiation from the aluminum continued even after the source of radiation was removed. This was because aluminum atoms had been converted into a radioactive isotope of phosphorus. That meant that, for the first time in history, a radioactive element had been created artificially.
