Latin America's first peace laureate Carlos Saavedra Lamas was born on 1 November 1878 in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
He was a pioneer in the field of labour legislation, editing several treatises on the topic in Argentina. In addition, he spoke or wrote legislation on many subjects with international ramifications, for example asylum, colonisation, immigration and international peace.
