Eugene O'Neill, American playwright, was born on October 16, 1886 at New York City, USA. His plays are often compared to that of Chekhov, Strindberg and Ibsen. His turbulent life was filled with depression, disease and alcoholism. He married thrice and all of them were failures. From the first marriage he had one child and from the second, two children. His only daughter, Oona, married the famous English actor, Charlie Chaplin. Both his sons committed suicide.

He died in Boston on November 27, 1953 at the age of 65.

He was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1936.
