GREAT SCIENTISTS

GREAT SOCIAL WORKERS

In his Nobel Lecture Muhammad Yunus explained what initiated his work fighting against poverty.

"I became involved in the poverty issue not as a policymaker or a researcher. I became involved because poverty was all around me, and I could not turn away from it.

In 1974, I found it difficult to teach elegant theories of economics in the university classroom, in the backdrop of a terrible famine in Bangladesh. Suddenly, I felt the emptiness of those theories in the face of crushing hunger and poverty. I wanted to do something immediate to help people around me, even if it was just one human being, to get through another day with a little more ease."

Wishing a happy birthday to Yunus today who was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2006 for his efforts to fight poverty. He granted poor people small loans on easy terms - micro-credit - before founding Grameen Bank to expand the initiative on a larger scale.

Isaac Newton produced many works that would now be classified as occult studies. These works explored chronology, alchemy, and Biblical interpretation (especially of the Apocalypse). Newton's scientific work may have been of lesser personal importance to him, as he placed emphasis on rediscovering the occult wisdom of the ancients. In this sense, some[1] believe that any reference to a "Newtonian Worldview" as being purely mechanical in nature is somewhat inaccurate.

GREAT SCIENTISTS : Norman Borlaug

'The father of the Green Revolution' - Norman Borlaug - is credited with saving millions from mass starvation.

The story of Norman Borlaug and the green revolution demonstrates how the combination of science, education and social entrepreneurship can transform the world - and save millions of lives.

The cartoon shows Borlaug cradling a new hardy type of wheat, called dwarf wheat, which was highly disease-resistant and not easily affected by wind and rain. Borlaug worked with scientists and farmers in Mexico to introduce the new breed. Thanks to their collaboration the country became self-sufficient in wheat in about 11 years.

Borlaug believed in educating farmers on the ground, a practice that turned out to be very successful. The learnings from Mexico were later taken up by other countries including India and Pakistan.

GERARD O'DONOVAN reviews The Fantastic Mr Feynman

A documentary exploring the life and career of noted physicist Richard Feynmann.

4 out of 5 stars

Richard Feynman, whose diagrams provided the first intuitive way of drawing particle interactions

By Gerard O'Donovan10:30PM BST 12 May 2013CommentsComments
Recently I watched The Challenger, an engrossing BBC Two drama starring William Hurt as a scientist battling terminal illness and deliberate obfuscation to get at the truth behind the 1986 space shuttle disaster. Beautifully crafted, it revealed as much about the indefatigable spirit of the physicist Richard Feynman as it did of his discovery that shockingly basic engineering failings had caused the disaster. It was aired again ahead of The Fantastic Mr Feynman (BBC Two, Sunday), an absorbing documentary that burrowed deep into the life of “one of the most extraordinary scientists of the 20th century”.
This was biography in the heroic mould, an unalloyed celebration of a man whose maverick tendencies affected everything he did in life (he died in 1988), from his wartime work on the A-bomb, to the problem solving that won him the Nobel Prize for his work in quantum electrodynamics. But the film also revealed a restless spirit who was as uncomfortable with his Nobel prize (“I don’t believe in honours, honours bother me”) as he was with knowing that his wartime work had contributed to tens of thousands of deaths.

At root were emotional factors: an adored father who instilled a dyed-in-the-wool contempt for authority; and an adored first wife, Arlene, lost to tuberculosis at 26. Factors that tempered his remarkable mathematical gifts with a broad streak of humanity and a sense of life’s uncertainty.

Feynman’s impish charm and bubbling-over desire to share his inexhaustible scientific wonder crackled off the screen. “He discovered a new law of nature; only very few people did that,” said his son Carl with pride. More likely though it is Feynman’s still rarer skills as a communicator of science – living on in the internet age through countless YouTube tributes and his enduringly popular books – that will keep his place secure among the greats.

GREAT WRITERS :KAFKA

At 40, Franz Kafka (1883-1924), who never married and had no children, walked through the park in Berlin when he met a girl who was crying because she had lost her favourite doll. She and Kafka searched for the doll unsuccessfully.
Kafka told her to meet him there the next day and they would come back to look for her.
The next day, when they had not yet found the doll, Kafka gave the girl a letter "written" by the doll saying "please don't cry. I took a trip to see the world. I will write to you about my adventures."
Thus began a story which continued until the end of Kafka's life.
During their meetings, Kafka read the letters of the doll carefully written with adventures and conversations that the girl found adorable.
Finally, Kafka brought back the doll (she bought one) that had returned to Berlin.
"It doesn't look like my doll at all," said the girl.
Kafka handed her another letter in which the doll wrote: "my travels have changed me." the little girl hugged the new doll and brought her happy home.
A year later Kafka died.
Many years later, the now-adult girl found a letter inside the doll. In the tiny letter signed by Kafka it was written:

"Everything you love will probably be lost, but in the end, love will return in another way."

GREAT STATESMEN : LAL BAHADUR SHASTRI

#TimeLapse #History

"There comes a time in the life of every nation when it stands at the crossroads of history and must choose which way to go. But for us, there need be no difficulty or hesitation, no looking to right or left. Our way is straight and clear—the building up of a secular mixed-economy democracy at home with freedom and prosperity, and the maintenance of world peace and friendship with select nations", said Lal Bahadur Shastri in his first broadcast as Prime Minister on June 11, 1964.

And he lived up to his words. Showing exemplary leadership , he helped India navigate through probably its most crisis-ridden period.

From calming the violent anti-Hindi agitation that erupted across the southern states to taking the first steps in resolving India’s biggest food shortage by promoting the Green Revolution (and convincing people to voluntarily give up one meal so that the food saved could be distributed to the affected populace) and the White Revolution (Amul cooperative) — Shastri oversaw several eventful moments in India's history.

However, his crowning moment was delivering probably one of the most iconic slogans of Independent India, ‘Jai Jawan, Jai Kisan.’

In a broadcast to the nation in October 1965, Shastri said, “We in India are passing through a difficult period in our history...The fields at home are no less important than fields in forward areas. The men in arms have to be supported by the men on farms.”

That same year, in yet another speech, Shastri iterated and explained the slogan he had raised. He said: “Food self-sufficiency is as important as a strong defence system...The kisan is as much a soldier as the jawan.”

Here's an interesting incident from his life that underlines the incredible honesty of an iconic leader who was austere to a fault.

In 1965, the Prime Minister of India Lal Bahadur Shastri bought a Fiat car after taking a loan of Rs 5,000 from Punjab National Bank. When his loan was approved early, Shastri told the bank, “The common man should have the same privilege”.

The legend passed away at Tashkent in 1966 before he could repay the loan.

Later, the bank wrote to his widow Lalita Shastri for repayment of the loan. The lady promised to pay it back in instalments from her family pension. And she repaid every rupee of the Rs 5,000.

Today, the fiat car still stands at Shastri's home, reminding us of the era of a different breed of men.

Stay tuned for more such interesting stories from history in our #TimeLapse series!

*GREAT SCIENTISTS*

“Thank you for saving my life."

Tomas Dahl (pictured left) was diagnosed with tonsil cancer and told there was no cure. But after trying the cancer therapy pioneered by 2018 Medicine Laureates James Allison and Tasuku Honjo (centre and right), he emerged cancer-free.

Dahl was one of several cancer patients who had the chance to share their story with the two Nobel Laureates at an emotional meeting in Stockholm, Sweden in December 2018. “Meeting the people who have benefitted from our research is the real prize for me,” said Allison. “When I meet patients who tell me: ‘You saved my life,' it is an unforgettable moment,” added Honjo.

After his diagnosis in January 2017, Dahl began convention cancer treatments – radiation, chemotherapy and surgery. No treatment worked. In February 2018, he was informed that there was nothing else that could be done. "I had a few months left to live,” says Dahl. "I explained to my kids that I would not make it."

In March, however, he began a new treatment: immunotherapy and – in his words – “was awarded the gift of life. The treatment had completely erased all cancer cells in my body.”

“There simply aren’t words to express the gratitude I feel,” he told Allison and Honjo. “I would not be here today if it wasn’t for you and your discovery.”

Allison and Honjo were awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for discovering a new cancer therapy which stimulates our immune system to attack tumour cells.

ROLE MODELS

#CoronaWarriors #InThisTogether

"We had hordes of people coming days and we kept continuously cooking food for them... We welcomed all with smiles and folded hands, irrespective of caste, religion... My regular team of 17 'sevaks', including 11 cooks and other helpers were overworked but ensured a non-stop supply of fresh, piping hot food," says Baba Karnail Singh Khaira.

For the last two months, 81-year-old Khaira has been serving meals free of cost to scores of travellers on the National Highway-7. His ramshackle tin shed with plastic sheets is the only spot that serves meals on a stretch of nearly 450 km.

"This is a remote, tribal region. Behind us for nearly 150-km, and ahead for nearly 300 km, there's not a single dhaba or restaurant... So most people prefer to halt at 'Guru ka langar' and avail of our round-the-clock services," says Khaira.

And that's not all. The compassionate man has also been feeding chapati-jaggery daily to over 250 hungry stray animals in the vicinity, including dogs, cats and cows.

GREAT WRITERS : GABRIEL GARZA MARQUEZ

May 5 :

On this day in 1967 Gabriel García Márquez's masterpiece of magical realism, 'One Hundred Years of Solitude', was published.

Gabriel José de la Concordia García Márquez was a Colombian novelist, short-story writer, screenwriter, and journalist, known affectionately as Gabo or Gabito throughout Latin America.
