Elinor Ostrom and the NOBEL PRIZE FOR ECONOMIC SCIENCES

"The power of a theory is exactly proportional to the diversity of situations it can explain."

When Elinor Ostrom applied for a PhD in economics she was turned away - her subsequent doctorate is actually in political sciences.

Despite this, in 2009, Ostrom became the first woman to be awarded the Prize in Economic Sciences in its forty year history. She was awarded the prize for her work on human cooperation and shared resources. Ostrom showed how natural resources can be shared sustainably by a community without central authorities or privatisation.

NOBEL LAUREATE Werner Forssmann and the first heart catheterisation

At the age of 24, Werner Forssmann had a plan - a plan he knew his superiors would never approve. The young German surgeon was frustrated by how difficult it was to access the human heart, but he doubted he'd get permission to perform a risky new procedure. And so, in 1929, he tried it on himself.

From the crook of his arm he inserted a thin catheter through a vein into his heart and took an X-ray photo. It was the very first heart catheterisation, which today is a common procedure used to find heart defects, deliver medicine and open up blocked arteries.

The experiment paved the way for many types of heart studies and in 1956 Forssmann shared the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine.

NOBEL LAUREATE KAILASH SATYARTHI

“There is no greater violence than to deny the dreams of our children.”

Since his childhood, Kailash Satyarthi had always questioned the wrong and unjust. As a young child of five years, he was disturbed deeply when he saw a small boy working with his cobbler father shining shoes at the school gate on the first day of school. He could not understand why some children were different from him. It did not take Satyarthi much time to understand the stark contrast between his life and that of the cobbler’s son.

Satyarthi always felt very strongly that all children are born equal and therefore have the right to lead a good life. Public schooling was not free when Satyarthi was around eleven years old, so with the help of a few like-minded friends, Satyarthi started a football club to raise money for those who were unable to attend school. In the years that followed Satyarthi and his friends went ahead and put up snack stalls at fetes and fairs and were able to raise money towards school fees of underprivileged children.

This was just the start of a decades long journey in which Satyarthi has been working to end child labour and campaign for children's right to education. In 2014 he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts.

Desmond Tutu, NOBEL PEACE PRIZE WINNER

In 1986, Desmond Tutu became the first black man to lead the Anglican Church in South Africa. Two years before in 1984 he had been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.

Like his countryman Albert Lutuli, the Anglican bishop Desmond Tutu received the Peace Prize for his opposition to South Africa's brutal apartheid regime. Despite bloody violations committed against the black population, as in the Sharpeville massacre of 1961 and the Soweto rising in 1976, Tutu adhered to his nonviolent line.

This episode of Ten Minute History (like a documentary, only shorter) covers the situation in the Eastern Steppe and the inter-tribal warfare there which saw the ascendancy of the Mongols. Led by Genghis Khan they waged a series of wars which over the course of decades saw the Mongol Empire become the largest contiguous empire in all of human history. Of course, the empire soon fell into civil war and from that came Khubilai Khan, whose policies earned him a reputation as a skilled and competent ruler.

Recommended Reading: John Man - The Mongol Empire: Genghis Khan, His Heirs and the Founding of Modern China. This book is a fantastic detailed overview of the empire and the Yuan dynasty. Has a great chapter on the Mongol's legacy.

Morris Rossabi - The Mongols: A Very Short Introduction. I always recommend these books but that's because they're great. This one has some issues with its structure but for its price point it's phenomenal.

This mini documentary takes a look at how Elon Musk sees the world through a scientific and engineering mind - and how this fuels the businesses he has started. We will also take a look at how he taught himself about different industries: from banking (Paypal), to rocket engineering (SpaceX). Elon Musk champions the use of physics as a way of thinking. And believes that more people should be innovating in manufacturing - to help build the city of the future. Rather than entering the finance, law, or internet based industries. This video also takes a look at the 'reasoning from first principles' framework - which will allow anyone to view their world, personal and business, just like Elon.
