Before the sun never set on the British Empire; before Genghis Khan swept the steppe; before Rome extended its influence to encircle the Mediterranean Sea; there was ancient Assyria. Considered by historians to be the first true empire, Assyria’s innovations laid the groundwork for every superpower that has followed. MARIAN H FELDMAN details the rise and fall of the Assyrian Empire. Lesson by Marian H Feldman, animation by Naghmeh Farzaneh. Thank you so much to our patrons for your support! GREAT LIVES

GREAT LIVES : AMIT RAJ

              Cadet Amit Raj of
           Sainik School, Purulia

We all know that Kareena Kapoor is expecting a second child.
We know that Anushka Sharma is expecting her first child.
We also know which actor wears which designer clothes.

But do we care to know who was Cadet Amit Raj?

We don’t.
I don't completely blame you for this.
We all waste our news appetite on junk news which never adds any value to our society.

On 7th of Dec, Cadet Amit Raj of Sainik School Purulia, was at his hometown in Bihar when he heard people shouting in the neighborhood. He stepped out to see that a neighboring house was on fire. Without thinking twice he entered the house to save 3 children who were trapped inside. He sustained 85% burns by the time he saved the first two children but still decided to save the third one. He was in no condition to save the third child but still entered the house to save the third in lieu if receiving 95% burns himself. He was admitted to a nearby hospital and was later sifted to Delhi. The braveheart lost his life on 13 December.

Not even single media house covered this story. Such a shame. Even Google will not throw much information about this incident.

Let us individually honour these souls by using the power of social media. Because only this will help us imbibe the values of sacrifice that can build a #New_India.

GREAT LIVES

FREDERICK BANTING & THE DISCOVERY OF INSULIN

The discovery of insulin is one of the biggest breakthroughs in medicine - and one of the most debated Nobel Prizes.

It is January, 1922, Toronto, Canada. 14-year-old Leonard Thompson is the first person with diabetes to receive insulin. The test is a success: Leonard, who before the insulin shots was near death, rapidly regains his strength and appetite.

The news of the successful test treatment rapidly spread, and in 1923, Frederick Banting and John Macleod share the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for the discovery of insulin.

However, Banting was furious with the choice of recipients. He felt that that the prize should have been shared between him and his assistant – medical student Charles Best – not between him and the senior diabetes researcher Macleod.

To credit Best, Banting shared his cash award with him. Macleod, in turn, shared his cash award with biochemist Bertram Collip who had joined the team during the testing phase.

Medicine Laureate William Kaelin!

Happy 63rd birthday(23 November) to 2019 Medicine Laureate William Kaelin!

William Kaelin shared the Medicine Prize with Sir Peter J. Ratcliffe and Gregg Semenza for their discoveries of how cells sense and adapt to oxygen availability.

Oxygen sensing is central to a large number of diseases. The discoveries made by the 2019 Medicine Laureates have fundamental importance for physiology and have paved the way for promising new strategies to fight anaemia, cancer and many other diseases.

Intense ongoing efforts in academic laboratories and pharmaceutical companies are now focused on developing drugs that can interfere with different disease states by either activating, or blocking, the oxygen-sensing machinery.

NOBEL PEACE PRIZE WINNER CARL VON OSSIETZKY

Under arrest at the time of the award, Carl von Ossietzky was unable to collect the Nobel Peace Prize.

Journalist and socialist Ossietzky was one of the foremost critics of political developments in Germany in the inter-war years. He revealed that the German authorities were secretly engaging in rearmament contrary to the Versailles Treaty. For this he was found guilty of treason and imprisoned. An international campaign was organised to have Ossietzky released. As one part of this campaign, he was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize.

#OnThisDay in 1936, the Nobel Committee announced that the Nobel Peace Prize was to be awarded to Ossietzky. Hitler reacted to the news with fury, and prohibited all Germans from receiving the Nobel Prize. The seriously ill laureate was refused permission to leave for Norway to accept the distinction. He died in a prison hospital in May 1938.
