Remembering the first Portuguese person to be awarded the Literature Prize, novelist and journalist José Saramago.
Despite his poor background, he learnt to read and write at an early age. He was a lifelong learner and worked as a mechanic at a car repair shop, journalist at a publishing company and literary critic.
His writings are known for their blend of imagination, compassion and irony. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature 1998.
