FRENCH INVENTOR, SCIENTIST & MATHEMATICIAN JACQUES CHARLES

It's birthday of French inventor, scientist & mathematician #Jacques_Alexandre_César_Charles

When #Benjamin_Franklin visited France in 1779, Charles was inspired to study physics. He soon became an eloquent speaker to non-scientific audiences. His lectures and demonstrations attracted notable patrons and helped popularize Franklin's theory of electricity and other new scientific concepts. With #Anne_Jean and #Nicolas_Robert, he made several balloon ascents, and was the first to use #hydrogen for balloon inflation (1783). Charles invented most of the equipment that is still used in today's balloons.

Charles's law, describing how gases tend to expand when heated, was formulated by #Joseph_Louis_Gay_Lussac in 1802, but he credited it to unpublished work by Jacques Charles.

Grateful thanks to
