George Marshall, American Secretary of State, Secretary of Defense and Chief of Staff of the Army, was born on December 31, 1880. He is also the author of the famous 'Marshall Plan' for the rehabilitation of the ravaged European countries after the Second World War. Marshall Plan won him the Nobel Prize for Peace in 1953.
I came to know of him through reading Robert E.Sherwood's beautiful three-volume book 'Roosevelt and Hopkins' and Harry Truman's 'Memoirs'.
He was born in a middle-class family in Uniontown, Pennsylvania. He graduated from the Virginia Military Institute and served the army, where he rose from First Lieutenant to Chief of Staff of Army. He was also a distant relative of American Chief Justice John Marshall.
He was the recipient of many national and international honours, besides the Nobel Peace Prize.

He passed away on October 16, 1959 at the age of 78.
